"Inventors and Violin Makers in the Pioneer Valley"
~ A sampler of the gallery ~
This virtual tour attempts to mirror the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum exhibition entitled "Inventors and Violin-Makers of the Pioneer Valley." The exhibition reveals how the early technologists in the Pioneer Valley applied their specialized skills to making violins and established a new self-taught profession of violin making. It shows how a handful of self-taught violin makers, who became successful professionals, trained apprentices and employees in the art of violin making. It exemplifies the stylistic link between master and pupil which forms a related school of work. Generally, it illuminates the creation of the American School. The life of Andrew Hyde, industrialist, machinist, inventor, gun maker, and violin maker, is a perfect example of this process.
It is suggested that you read the sections on Early American violin-making and the Pioneer Valley and Violin Making, then tour the Andrew Hyde exhibit to understand how it all fits together. You may continue the tour by visiting the other 21 violin-makers. If you have an interest in a particular maker, you will find the alphabetical listing most convenient. Makers may also be searched by region for those wishing to learn more about the makers in a particular area.
Composite photographs of each violin in the collection are included with front, back, side and scroll views as well as a photo of the makers label.. Owners of violins wishing to compare their own instruments with those in the collection will find the photos detailed and informative.
Enjoy the tour!
